Gap Just Proved That Entertainment Isn't Marketing. It's Business.

In January, we broke down why Gap's comeback was actually a masterclass in building cultural relevance. Back-to-back viral campaigns. High-profile collaborations. A return to profitability that generated nearly $1B in operating income across 2024 and 2025. The brand that seemed lost in the early days of social media had figured out how to win again.

But the real signal just came this week.

Hailey Bieber's announcement as Gap's newest collaborator isn't a campaign. It's proof that the entertainment model works so well, Gap needed to reorganize its entire business around it. They didn't hire a Chief Marketing Officer. They hired a Chief Entertainment Officer. Pam Kaufman now sits at the C-suite level, responsible for content, licensing, and cultural partnerships across music, film, television, sports, and gaming.

This is what founders need to understand: entertainment stopped being a tactic. It became the business.
