“You and Courtney are the absolute best! I needed this episode and it is why I will never settle” - HSR Angel
Happy podcast day angels!! Today we are doing something a little different because I am sitting down with my favorite person to talk business, money and investing with…my HUSBAND Courtney Reum!!
Courtney is a serial entrepreneur, co-founder of M13 and venture capitalist, and whenever we sit down together, I feel like I leave understanding the business world SO much better. So today we are breaking down the biggest headlines and conversations I think you need to know right now.
We get into the BÉIS acquisition, the employee backlash happening at Canva around liquidity and valuation, Oura’s path to a massive IPO and why we are seeing SO many creators go from building audiences to becoming investors.
And obviously I had to ask Courtney what we actually look for when we are investing. We talk about what makes a good investment, the mistakes people make and how we think about building long term wealth together.
But this episode is also a little personal because we just celebrated our first wedding anniversary!! We talk about our European summer, some of our favorite moments from the last year and answer your questions about couples' finances, talking about money with friends and navigating wealth in relationships.
If you are one of the angels who wants to understand what is actually happening in business right now AND get smarter about your own money, this is the episode you have to listen to.
At the beginning of this conversation, I made a promise to you that if you listen in full, you will walk away understanding how to:
spot what actually makes a good investment
understand the business headlines everyone is talking about
have better conversations about money and building wealth
So angels, are you ready to get hot smart rich?!

It’s Time To Work Your Assets
Work your assets. That is the #1 principle (and secret) I have when it comes to scaling Hot Smart Rich, and my team is probably annoyed at how much I repeat it.
I spend a lot of time creating original content, so when we have something good, I want that asset working across every platform.
Our “Consumer Trends I’m Gossiping About” series is guaranteed to get 100,000+ views on Instagram every week. But when we started posting the exact same content on LinkedIn, it was getting 8,000 to 15,000 views. It drove me nuts.
So instead of creating something new, I pushed my team to figure out why it wasn’t working. We started using Stanley by Stan to rethink how we packaged the exact same posts for LinkedIn.
The next one did 146,000 views.
Same information, same research, same trends. We just changed the hook and caption for LinkedIn.
Stan is where entrepreneurs come to build their business, and it’s become one of the ways we’re doing that at HSR.
I really don’t think you need 10 new ideas a day to build and scale a media business. You need to get really good at recognizing when you have a good one, and then sweat the heck out of it.
The Creator Brands We’re Watching

There is so much activity going on in the creator ecosystem. After Beis sold in a $210 million deal, I’m excited to see what other activity piggy packs on top of it so today we’re sharing some of our other favorite creator brands and what sets them apart.
01. Reale Actives by Alix Earle. After binging Earle meets world, it’s clear Alix knows her audience and exactly what they want to buy from her.
02. Beis by Shay Mitchell. I’m on the road 200 days a year and genuinely have been using Beis luggage for years. This is my checked luggage.
03. Rhode by Hailey Bieber. Rhode continues to be the creator brand darling and yes, I need the Alexandra Leclerc mini pocket blush and butterly charm collab.
04. Renggli by Morgan Stewart. Morgan is the queen of denim and think this brand has great structured elevated basics for an angel off duty vibe.
05. The Bar by Bridget. I have loved Bridget’s transparency when it comes to The Bar and her journey with breast cancer and chemo treatment because being an entrepreneur is not easy on the best of days.
06. Daphne by Paige Desorbo. This brand feels so New York to me. I know the team working with Paige on Daphne and wish their bridal collection was around last summer!!
07. Dairy Boy by Paige Lorenze. Paige knows how to ride a cultural moment and the DB Sport launch during the US Open was no different.
08. Elm Biosciences by Martha Stewart. To me, she is the original influencer and this skincare brand makes sense. No one is paying attention to the mature skincare category.
09. Florence by Mills by Millie Bobby Brown. This brand is a favorite and best seller at Ulta and I get why. Millie has the perfect brand across beauty and fashion to service her Gen Z audience.
10. Frankie’s Bikinis by Francesca Aiello. This is a brand that has already stood the test of time. The recent collabs with Paige Lorenze for Bridal, Kylie Jenner for Khy, and Devon Lee Carson (Sunshine Girls) have been iconic.
Hot Smart Rich Tip

Hot: Do the basics before you optimize. I think people can get a little too into biohacking and optimization without doing the basics first. Get some sunshine, have relationships, laugh, walk around the city. The wearable and the data are great, but I always check to see if I feel good in my body before I check my apps.
Smart: Build an information diet. I try to spend the beginning of my day getting informed across a mix of pop culture, tech, consumer, politics and perspectives outside the U.S. We’re living in an attention economy, so I’m really mindful of what I have coming at me, what gets pushed to me and what I actually seek out. You’re the average of the people you spend the most time with, but you’re also the average of the things you consume.
Rich: Don’t confuse a good product with a good investment. There is a difference between a product that I like and consume and what makes a good investment. Sometimes they overlap, but you can’t confuse the two. I look for the right idea, right context and right timing, and ultimately, investing is about asymmetric risk-reward. If something can go to zero, I want enough potential upside to justify taking that risk.
