What Actually Gets Women Ahead
The five things I would focus on if I was trying to get promoted today, and what the research says about women’s ambition and getting promoted.

The angels have spoken and thanks to you!!! my second solo episode went out today. After the 100’s of comments I received from the first one, we proved to the team that solos needed to come back. So while I was sitting thinking about what I wanted to share, and from all of the questions that came through on the Instagram Q&A box about what you wanted to hear about, there was a big theme focusing around careers and how to actually get ahead.
I filmed this episode two and a half weeks ago in LA and have been waiting for it to go out. As soon as it went live this morning, I’ve received so many comments loving the the data-driven approach and some of the frameworks that I shared, I decided that I was going to share more of the details and research that the team put together in order to help this episode come to life. It’s some of the things from the cutting room floor, the research brief, and just general thoughts on getting ahead in your career.
Again, I want to make it very clear that I answer questions based on my personal perspective and my experience, not as broad sweeping advice. But if I was a 20-30 something in the early stages of grinding in my career, this is what I would want to know.
So I went back through the 13-page research brief the team prepared for me and my notes to prepare for this episode am going to share:
The five things I would focus on if I was trying to get ahead now, based on what worked for me, what I would do differently and what the research says actually matters.
The psychology behind why competence is attractive, including why we judge people on warmth and competence, what triggers admiration versus envy and why women with unexpected expertise make us pay attention.
What the research says about women’s ambition and getting promoted, including why a sponsor matters, why women need to make their work visible and the VERY different impact remote work can have on women.
Why experience is not the part of your career you need to skip, including the age and actual work experience of the most successful founders.
If you are set on being a career girl and want to know how to make sure the job is actually getting you ahead, keep reading.
So let’s get into it.
